New Litter Born January 6, 2010!

There are many different opinions about what kind of food you should feed your gerbils. Some people think you should only feed them all natural homemade food, others just grab some store bought seed mix and think they are good to go. While either of those methods would probably work just fine, I make my own mix out of store bought food. For the main part I use Kaytee Forti-diet mouse and rat blocks. Then, I go to the wild bird food section and choose a bag that is a mixture of sunflower seeds, corn, and various other nuts and seeds. If you purchase the mixture from the wild bird food section you can get it a lot cheaper than buying the stuff marketed toward hamsters and gerbils. My gerbils get mostly the mouse and rat blocks and then I give them a small amount of the seed mix along with the blocks. You have to be careful not to feed your gerbils too many sunflower seeds or you will end up with overweight gerbils who only pick out their favorite things to eat.
