Something that a lot of people don't realize is that gerbils need sand baths. While I clean their cage out, the gerbils get sand baths. I put the gerbils in a deep rubbermaid container and then I put some chinchilla sand in a small dish and put it in with the gerbils. They love to roll in it and dig it in and it does wonders for their coats. You can give them sand baths when you clean their cages or when you notice their fur looking a little greasy. Gerbil fur should be smooth, shiny, and clean looking. You can purchase special sand bath containers at the pet store or you can just use a small bowl or container. One very important thing to remember is that when you are purchasing sand for your gerbils, be sure you are purchasing SAND and not DUST. Dust is too fine for gerbil respiratory systems and can make them sick.
