When you choose a wheel for your gerbils you must be very careful making your choice. It is very important that you don't get a wheel that has any areas where a gerbil tail could get caught. Most of the wire wheels are not appropriate for gerbils. Wire rung wheels are a definite no no because gerbil feet can get injured or worse, they could break a leg if they get it caught between the rungs. The best wheel to get has a solid running surface. The wheels we use are called silent spinners. They are a hard plastic with a solid running surface and there are no spots where a tail could get caught.
